[Updated] Biden’s office steps in trying to defuse tensions between Kosovo and Serbia, EU urges for new elections ASAP in 4 northern municipalities and Serbia -backed Serbs to participate

Washington/Prishtina/Belgrade, 03 June 2023, dtt-net.com – The USA’s Principal Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer has urged Kovovan Prime Minister Albin Kurti “to enable newly elected mayors (in four Serb-predominantly northern municipalities) to carry out their duties from alternative locations and to withdraw police forces from municipal buildings’ and has also welcomed his “willingness to work towards conditions for new elections”, while urging Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic to “withdraw its armed forces stationed near the (Kosovo) border and to lower their state of readiness, as well as to urge protesters to remain peaceful in northern Kosovo”, calling of both leaders to  “re-engage in the EU-facilitated Dialogue and to fully implement the normalization agreement” of February and March this year.

At the same time, EU’s chief of diplomacy Josep Borrell today said :

“Early elections should be announced as soon as possible in all four (northern) municipalities and organised in a fully inclusive manner. We expect Kosovo Serbs to take part in these elections”.
