Skopje, 05 June 2023, dtt-net.com – Internal disputes in the Albanian Democratic Union (DUI) have accelerated recently and the junior ruling partner of Macedonian social-democrats is splitting in two, with the splitting fraction considering forming its own new party and seeking partnership with other smaller parties for a joint pre-election coalition ticket.
News website Zhurnal.mk in Albanian language reported during the weekend that the two former deputy chairmen of DUI, Musa Xhaferi and Izet Mexhiti, are about to find a name for the fraction into Democratic Union for Reforms (DUR, alb: BDR), as one of the options of names.
At the same time, sources say that deciding for a name of the split group would be the first step toward deciding forming a new party, and definitely leave DUI which is led since its formation in 2021 by Ali Ahmeti, the former leader of guerrilla of ethnic Albanians of the country which fought for more rights in 2001.
That the divisions have reached a no-return point, proves the fact that 21st anniversary of DUI formation was market today separately by Ahmeti’s DUI and the fraction led by Xhaferi and Mexhiti in two different places, with the two refusing to attend the one of Ahmeti’s.
Zhurnal.mk has also earlier reported of the fraction being interested of establishing partnership with Movement Besa and Alternativa party for a joint pre-election ticket.
Sources from movement Besa, who requested anonymity have confirmed to dtt-net.com that Xhaferi and Mexhiti have already discussed the issue with Besa’s leader Billall Kasami, who took the mayoral post in DUI’s stronghold, Tetova municipality, in municipal elections in 2021.
Today, Kasami today told RTV21 that he and his party are working “in building a wide opposition coalition… to send Ali Ahmeti home”.
The new developments related to DUI split in two and another political party to be likely added in list of parties of ethnic Albanians, come ahead of next year presidential elections in the country and as local media and observers say that early elections in the country could not be excluded this or next year amid deadlock over constitutional changes the country is asked to do for continuing with EU accession deadlock.
The current governing coalition of the Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski is short of 2/3rd of votes for changes imposed by Bulgaria to include Bulgarian community in the Constitution, as two parties of ethnic Macedonians are against and refuse to give their votes for.
Without making the changes Skopje cannot open negotiating chapters/clusters in EU accession talks, Bulgaria has conditioned with its veto power inside the 27-member bloc.
