Sarajevo, 26 July 2026, dtt-net.com – Five Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) citizens have died in Russian mountains of Elbrus, while two are rescued.
Bosnian Ambassador to Moscow Ivan Orlić told BHRT Tv that of a group of seven, two Bosnians are found dead, two others are rescued, while Russian rescue teams, according to Russian media, have recovered bodies of another three, awaiting evacuation.
Bosnian media reported that all seven climbers are from Zenica town.
Mount Elbrus is the highest mountain in Russia and Europe. It is a dormant stratovolcano rising 5,642 metres above sea level, and is the highest volcano in Eurasia, as well as the tenth-most prominent peak in the world.
Elbrus is located eleven kilometres north of the Greater Caucasus Watershed, marking the border with Georgia, it is on the border of the Russian republics of Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia.
The summer period takes place from June to mid-September, with an average of 50% of sunny days favourable to the ascent of the summit. However, the winds, dominated by westerly air masses, can turn violent and temperatures drop very quickly. Above 4000 meters, even in summer, blizzard conditions with near zero visibility can develop.
