Sarajevo, 06 October 2026, dtt-net.com – Two top officials of the European Union today reiterated call to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) politicians to start working on reforms following Sunday elections, which are needed for the country to qualify for opening of first negotiating chapters in EU accession talks.
“The EU will continue supporting the country on the EU path and cooperate with the new authorities on all EU-related reforms. The EU urges Bosnia and Herzegovina to take all relevant steps set out in the Commission’s 2022 recommendation, in line with the March 2024 European Council decision to open accession negotiations,” EU chief of diplomacy Kaja Kallas and Commissioner Marta Kos, called in a press statement.
“This would pave the way for the [EU] Council to adopt the negotiating framework and to hold the long-awaited first intergovernmental accession conference,” they said, reiterating once more bloc’s “commitment to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s EU perspective as a single, united and sovereign country.”
BiH was granted EU candidate status in December 2022 but has not opened accession negotiations, thus any negotiating chapters, because of insufficient progress with Brussels-set reforms as consequence of political disputes between Bosniak, Serb and Croat parties.
