Belgrade, 26 March 2026, dtt-net.com – Municipal elections will take place in ten municipalities in Serbia on March 29, and country’s students will for first time run against candidates of the ruling Progressive Party (SNS) controlled by authoritarian President Aleksandar Vucic who was at forefront of party’s election campaign.
Elections are taking place in Arandjelovac, Bajina Basta, Majdanpek, Bor, Kula, Smederevska Palanka, Kladovo, Knjazevac, Lucani and Sevojno, and students will participate with their own Students List for the first time in elections, after more than a year of widespread and almost daily protests against Vucic and SNS, triggered by collapse of train stations in northern town of Novi Sad which killed 16 people, including one student.
In three municipalities only Students List will run against SNS and its partners parties, as opposition parties have decided not to run but focus their supporters in supporting students. In Two municipalities both, students and opposition parties will run together and in other municipalities they will run separately.
Participation of students for seats in municipal councils is the first test of support for students, as they are preparing to run in early parliamentary elections they are calling for a year alredy hoping to out Vucic and his SNS from power, whom they accuse of corruption and control of judiciary and police.
