Bulgaria wants to protect the identity of the Bulgarian community in North Macedonia, says minister

Sofia/Skopje, 08 April 2026, dtt-net.com - Bulgaria is not escalating demands towards North Macedonia in relation to the precondition agreed by other EU countries too in 2022 for the start of accession talks with the candidate country, but wants only to protect the identity of Bulgarian community, Sofia officials said. In an interview with BNT television, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria, Nadezhda Neynski, said that the demand for amending the constitution of North Macedonia, is only about respecting the Bulgarian identity of the Bulgarian community in the neighboring country.
