Brussels/Belgrade, 20 April 2026, dtt-net.com – The European Commissioner Marta Kos today reiterated criticism of the European Commission (EC) over judiciary laws adopted by Serbia’s Parliament and sponsored by the ruling Progressive Party (SNS) controlled by authoritarian President Aleksandar Vucic, crack down on protesters and independent media and refusal to join EU sanctions on Russia.
“We are increasingly worried what is happening in Serbia. I share the concerns voiced by MPs from the Greens and Renew group from laws that undermine the independence of the judiciary to crack down on the protesters and the current meddling on the independent media,” Kos said.
“We are currently assessing whether the country still fulfils conditions for payments under the EU financial instruments. We will continue for sure to support Serbia on its EU path, but we expect the authorities to fully align its judicial with the [pending] Venice Commission’s recommendations, and to restore independence of its media including through reform of the REM [regulatory body for electronic media], and we want to see constant improvements in the CFSP [common foreign and security policy] alignments,” Kos said.
