Bulgaria tells North Macedonia again to change Constitution on Bulgarian community, vowing no more conditions in EU entry process

Skopje/Sofia, 11 June 2025, dtt-net.com – Bulgarian government officials told their Macedonian counterparts today that Skopje should implement agreement of 2022 of previous governments, which became EU condition for North Macedonia to launch membership negotiations and vowed that no more conditions will be set by Sofia during the process as stipulated in a recent resolution of Bulgarian parliament.

Bulgarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Georg Georgiev conveyed the position today to his Macedonian counterpart Timcho Mucunski, during a phone discussion.

According to the press release, Georgiev informed Mucunski about the resolution of Bulgarian parliament adopted on May 30, 2025.

“Decision of the 51st National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria on the progress of the Republic of North Macedonia in the EU accession process. Our first diplomat stated that this act once again confirms our country’s unwavering position of categorical commitment to the European Consensus of July 2022 and makes an encouraging call to the government in Skopje to implement the agreements reached,” Georgiev’s office said.

“A particularly important point is that the text of the Decision of the highest authority in the Bulgarian state reaffirms that our country has no conditions beyond the elements of the European consensus…,” reads the press release.

“The National Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution on the progress of the Republic of North Macedonia in the process of accession to the European Union. It states that Bulgaria remains fully committed to the European consensus of July 2022 and calls on the authorities in the Republic of North Macedonia to also strictly implement the agreements they have undertaken,” Bulgarian Parliament said in a press release last month following the resolution.

The previous government in Skopje, led by the social-democrat SDSM party had agreed with Bulgaria imposed condition to change the Constitution and which became part of the negotiating framework between the EU and North Macedonia.

But the SDSM-led government was short of votes in the 120-seat parliament to make the changes, as the biggest party, the conservative VMRO-DPMNE and the left-wing Levica were and continue to be against changes proposed.

VMRO-DPMNE leader and prime minister since June 2024, Hristijan Mickoski, says he would be ready to change his mind and vote the changes demanded, only if it take effect after the country becomes member of the EU, and if Bulgaria and the EU guarantee that there will no other demands from Sofia during the negotiating process.

The resolution confirms the firm position of Sofia dashing Micskoski’s hopes for renegotiations and a compromise, as it called Skopje once more to make the changes in order the country can open first negotiating chapters in EU accession talks.
