Brussels/Belgrade, 21 August 2026, dtt-net.com – As an opposition party in Serbia recently proposed to establish a “prosecutorial police”, to avoid and prevent meddling of the ministry of interior and government as a whole in the police work in cases treated by the prosecutor’s office, the European Commission (EC) reiterated its call of 2025 to the country to adopt a law which would enable through a new law what it called “operational autonomy” of the police from the ministry during pre-investigation and investigation phases and accountable only to the prosecutor.
“This includes a recommendation relating to Chapter 24 on Justice, Freedom, and Security to make the police fully autonomous from the Ministry of the Interior and accountable only to the Prosecutor’s Office during pre-investigation and investigation phases,” an EU Commission spokesperson told dtt-net.com when asked to comment on the proposal of earlier this month by the Party for Freedom and Justice (SSP).
