Belgrade, 22 January 2026, dtt-net.com – Trump’s former envoy for Western Balkans suggested to Serbia’s President to abandon country’s EU path and pursue what he called “USA path”, prompting a fierce reaction by a member of European Parliament over the authoritarian Serbian leader Aleksandar Vucic and his ruling Progressive Party (SNS).
“Europe is in trouble - your economies are strangled by Brussels. Innovation is almost dead. Companies aren’t growing inside Europe. Vucic should follow the U.S. path - not the European path,” Richard Grenell wrote in reaction to a meeting of Vucic at Davos with the EU Commissioner Marta Kos over state of play of reforms in Serbia needed for EU membership.
