Belgrade, 20 September 2026, dtt-net.com – Authoritarian President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, announced today that he will resign from the top post after two terms of ruling, hoping to rule again through prime minister post if he wins October elections, while he is in unofficial active election campaign for months already, as this time he is facing students too and their supporters, who have mobilized against him since late 2024 after tragic action of train station canopy collapse killing 16 people, including students Calling citizens to vote for him and his Progressive Party (SNS), he also called citizens not to vote for his opponents, whom he attacked, without mentioning names, of Montenegro's regaining independence in 20026 and Kosovo’s independence declared by in 2008.
“All those who think to bring in to power just anyone, remember the years of 2000s, after that we left 500,000 people out of work, we were left without Montenegro, they declared the independence of Kosovo and all in just a few years,” Vucic said in a video statement over October 25 early elections.
Vucic is already in active election campaign since last year, and accelerated further since earlier this year, and is being accused by his opponents of using state resources in his travels city to city and municipality to municipality promising more money and more infrastructure projects.
Vucic and the government dominated by SNS, which he controls, have adapted state budget promising to citizens increase of salaries in public sector, social allowances, pensions, minimum salary, average salary and one-time aid.
In a joint press conference with the Minister of Finance, Sinisa Mali, ten days ago, Aleksandar Vucic promised that as of 1 December increase in salaries in the public sector will be 8 percent, in the social protection sector 12 percent and pensions 7.5 percent.
He also promised that as of 1 January 2027, minimum net salary will increase to 600 euros and as of 1 December average salary in the country will up to 1200 euros.
He also reiterated the one-time aid of 6000 (51 Euros) denars for all adult age.
He also promised for young people of younger than 35-year-old 6000 favourable loans for their first house.
On 31 August on the proposal of government, the parliament voted budget rebalance which envisages distribution of financial help to different social categories in September, just a month ahead of early elections.
According to the proposal presented by minister Mali the total value of all announced state aid to the citizens of Serbia will amount to 980.6 million euros, which he says will be distributed this month, of which pensioners a one-time financial aid of 20,000 (170 Euros) to 35,000 dinars (300 euros), depending on the amount of their pension, while the aid also goes to citizens who receive financial social assistance, child and veteran’s allowance, as well as to soldiers.
The minister said that the second part of the financial aid package is the payment of a one-time aid of 6,000 dinars (51 Euros) to all citizens of legal age, which will be realized between September 22 and 25.
Total 15 political parties and movement from the opposition will not participate in October 25 elections, with the one and same goal of aiming to boost support to the list of students, “Students List-Students win”, against Vucic and party.
So far from the opposition ranks, Freedom and Justice Party (SSP), Serbia Centre (SRCE) and the “Civil Solidarity” Movement have announced participation in October 25 elections through the “European Serbia” list.
Three opinion surveys of this year say students would, while a fourth one said Vucic and SNS would.
