Tensions resume in Albania parliament over indicted deputy PM/Minister

Tirana, 19 January 2026, dtt-net.com – The first session of this year of Albania Parliament was marred with tensions as opposition lawmakers blocked the podium protesting the presence of the indicted Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Energy Belinda Balluku by the prosecutor’s office and refusal of the ruling party to lift her immunity to pave the way for her arrest. For 25 minutes of today’s session, lawmakers of two opposition parties called for removal of Balluku from the session, which the Speaker of the Parliament Niko Peleshi refused to do, as he and the ruling Socialist Party (PS) on orders of the Prime Minister Edi Rama refuse for the time being to treat prosecutor’s office request over her immunity.
