Belgrade, 20 January 2025, dtt-net.com – Serbian authorities said that eight people died and seven were injured during the night in a fire at a nursing home for elderly in Barajevo municipality of the capital Belgrade.
The Interior Ministry said that the fire broke at 3:32am and 30 people were inside. 22 were rescued by firefighters, of whom seven injured.
“There were 30 people in the home at the time of the fire, eight of whom died, seven people were injured, three of whom were treated in the Emergency Centre and four at the Military Medical Academy. The remaining beneficiaries were placed in another home for the elderly,” the ministry said in a press release.
Authorities suspect that the fire was an arson and investigation is launched.
“There are grounds for suspicion that the fire was set ablaze, and the police, in cooperation with the competent prosecutor’s office, are continuing intensive work to determine all the circumstances and facts of this event,” the ministry said.
