Sarajevo, 11 July 2025, dtt-net.com – Thousands attended today’s burial ceremony of remains of 7 Bosniak victims at Srebrenica-Potočari memorial centre on the 30th anniversary of the Genocide, when more than 8000 Bosniak boys and men were slaughtered by Serb entity army.
Every year since 1995, remains of victims found in different locations in the Srebrenica surroundings are exhumed and buried in Potoçari memorial centre.
30 years ago, Serb entity forces massacred 8372 Bosniak civilians in Srebrenica area.
The number of found victims – in different mass graves in and around Srebrenica area – and buried in Potočari is nearly 7000 so far.
Western diplomats and officials were in Srebrenica today to pay tribute to the victims.
“Srebrenica is a deep scar on European history. It is our duty to remember. It is our duty to stand up – and never look away whenever the preachers of hate question human rights and undermine the dignity of others. We must say No to the divisions, No to hate, No to the glorification of war criminals…,” the European Commissioner in charge of EU enlargement, Marta Kos, said in a video message from the Potočari memorial centre.
“We honour the memory of those brutally killed and those still missing. We honour those whose absence leaves an unfillable void. We stand in solidarity with the loved ones left behind. We offer you our deepest solidarity. Your grief is shared by all of us. And we pledge to keep the memory alive. In this moment of remembrance, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to accountability and truth. There is no room in Europe – or anywhere else – for genocide denial, revisionism, or the glorification of those responsible. Denying such horrors only poisons our future. It is our duty to confront and acknowledge the full truth. This is the first step in ensuring that such atrocities never happen again,” said the President of European Council, Antonio Costa, at the commemoration ceremony in Potočari.
The killings in Srebrenica in July 1995 were perpetrated by units of the Bosnian Serb Army of Republika Srpska (VRS) entity under the command of General Ratko Mladic who was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2017 by the International Criminal Tribunal for former-Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague, Netherlands.
The wartime political leader of Bosnia Serbs, Radovan Karadzic, was also found guilty of Srebrenica slaughter and sentenced to life imprisonment.
The ‘Scorpions,’ a paramilitary unit from Serbia, who had been part of the Serbian Interior Ministry until 1991, also participated in the massacre.
The ICTY and courts in BiH have sentenced more than 50 people so far over the Genocide, while some others indicted have found refuge in Serbia.
On May 23, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring July 11 of 1995 as annual Remembrance Day of the Genocide in Srebrenica.
A commemorative event was organized at the General Assembly of the world body on Tuesday (July 8) in New York.
A day earlier the European Parliament in Strasbourg also commemorated the 30th anniversary of the Genocide.
