Serbia students say nearly 400 000 signatures collected calling for early elections

Belgrade, 29 December 2025, dtt-net.com – Students of Serbia said they gathered yesterday 393 045 signatures in nearly 500 locations across the country in a move calling authoritarian President Aleksandar Vucic to set up a date for early parliamentary elections. “With the ‘Call elections’ campaign, which we raised up the whole of Serbia, we showed that the first necessary step towards a better future is to call early parliamentary elections,” the group ‘Studenti u Blokadi’ (Students in blockade) X account said.

“This campaign proved to us that even after more than a year of continuous struggle, will and strength do not wane. Every signature, every word exchanged and every smile showed how much a strong community means and how much we can achieve when we act united, as well as how important the decision and vote of each individual are,” the group added.

According to the organizers, signatures will not be sent to institutions but will serve as indication of support to Students List in the election, as they are preparing to run in the early elections through their own list to be made of professors and non-affiliated personalities.

Students say that that full accountability over corruption in construction sector which led to the tragic accident a year ago when train station canopy collapse in norther town of Novi Sad killed 16 people can be reached only by ousting Vucic and his Progressive Party (SNS) from power.

Vucic continues saying that early parliamentary elections could take place in May or December 2026, but he still refuses to reveal his plans when exactly the vote will take place.

He has also hinted to resign from the current post and run for prime minster seat through his SNS party, as he cannot run for president position for a third time.
