Brussels, 29 January 2026, dtt-net.com – The European Commission (EC) today made the first step in its attempt trying to respond to the truck drivers of four Western Balkans countries, but its proposal for a new legislation at EU level to extend duration of stay beyond 90 days within 180 days must be agreed by 27 EU member states.
“The Commission will work closely with Member States to identify pragmatic solutions to accommodate extended short stays for selected categories of third-country nationals, ensuring a security and economic benefit for the Union, as well as legal clarity for travellers. These reflections will also explore the introduction of new legislation with a specific set of extended short-stay rules at EU level,” reads the proposal of the EC to the governments of 27 member states of the European bloc made today and related to the concerns of region’s truck drivers over their daily import and export of merchandise with the EU countries.
