EU Parliament calls Albania’s government to freeze construction plans in protected areas, as anti-PM daily massive protests continue

Strasbourg, 17 June 2026, dtt-net.com – The European Parliament (EP) today in a resolution called the government of the Prime Minister Edi Rama to “to immediately establish a moratorium on all new permitting procedures, construction works and development interventions within protected areas,” until the “incompatible provisions of the amended Law on Protected Areas have been repealed, on the basis of a longstanding request by the [European] Commission and Parliament and in line with the closing benchmarks of Chapter 27, and until full compliance with EU nature protection standards has been ensured.”

The call comes amid Rama’s insistence to go ahead with investments plans by Qatari investors and Donald Trump’s in two coastal areas.

EU lawmakers in the text expressed “serious concern that ongoing developments within the Vjosa-Narta protected area demonstrate the practical consequences of these legislative changes and the resulting risks to areas of recognised ecological value”, adding that the EP “closely follows the ongoing peaceful mass protests.”

For 18th consecutive day, dozens of thousands are calling Rama to abandon touristic resort construction plans in Zvernec coastal village of Qatari investors, who are also linked with Jared Kushner plans for hotel resort Sazan island.

The EP said that any projects in this area “need to undergo comprehensive environmental impact assessments fully in line with EU standards, including a transparent public participation process with local communities, scientists and civil society.”

Protesters are also calling for Rama’s resignation, and vow not to stop the protests until he steps down.
