Sarajevo/The Hague, 27 August 2026, dtt-net.com – The lifetime sentenced over Srebrenica Genocide, the Serb “Butcher of Bosnia” Ratko Mladic died today in the Hague, the UN Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals announced.
“Mr. Ratko Mladić passed away today while hospitalised in The Hague, The Netherlands,” it announced in a press release.
Mladić was in palliative care suffering from cancer.
He was commander of Serb entity’s forces during the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).
Mladić was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2017 over Srebrenica Genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity on Bosniak civilians.
The ‘Scorpions,’ a paramilitary unit from Serbia, who had been part of the Serbian Interior Ministry until 1991, also participated in the massacre of more than 8000 Bosniak boys and men in July 1995.
The wartime political leader of Bosnia Serbs, Radovan Karadzic, was also found guilty of Srebrenica slaughter and sentenced to life imprisonment by ICTY, the court in The Hague formed by the United Nations and replaced by the mechanism to deal with implementation of verdicts and remaining proceedings of ICTY.
Despite being sentenced over Genocide, he is glorified by many Serbs in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), in Serbia, in Montenegro, and in Kosovo.
