Belgium’s shipowner to construct, finance, and own Green Ammonia terminal in Namibia

Brussels, 21 October 2026, dtt-net.com – The Antwerpen-based company CMB.TECH, which owns about 235 seagoing vessels, has decided to start construction of a Green Ammonia shipping terminal in Namibia in 2027, aiming to conclude construction works and make it functional two years later.

“CMB.TECH will develop, finance and fully own the ammonia storage and bunkering terminal at the Port of Walvis Bay. Subject to permits and agreements, construction is expected to start next year,” the Chief Technology Officer at CMB.TECH Roy Campe told dtt-net.com, following decisions made last week by shareholders.

Green Ammonia is a carbon-free compound (NH₃) produced by combining Nitrogen from the air with Green Hydrogen which is created via water electrolysis powered by renewable energy. It serves as a sustainable fertilizer, shipping fuel, and hydrogen carrier

Campe said the company aims “to start operations in 2029” and will “support CMB.TECH’s fleet of more than 40 ammonia-capable vessels and the wider maritime market as demand for ammonia fuel develops.”

Green Ammonia will be supplied from a future green ammonia facility near Arandis, connected to the terminal by pipeline, and is targeting annual production of about 200,000 tonnes in its first phase, according to Campe, while the company is also discussing with potential suppliers in “several regions, as well as with prospective third-party customers”.

The company has not disclosed any financial costs for construction of terminal so far, …..
