Tirana, 16 October 2026, dtt-net.com - Massive student-led demonstrations convulsed Albania, escalating into violent clashes with riot police as civil unrest spread from the capital to multiple northern cities. The protests, now in their fourth consecutive day, are driving widespread demands for the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, whom demonstrators accuse of presiding over systemic state corruption. In the capital city of Tirana, a volatile demonstration gridlocked the city centre for nearly 11 hours, with the crowd swelling by thousands by nightfall to pack the main square and chant "down with dictatorship" aimed at Rama and his associates.
The demonstrations led to intense street confrontations, with protesters throwing stones and hard objects at security lines while riot police utilized tear gas and tactical interventions to disperse the crowd.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing men in civilian clothing, believed to be plainclothes operatives from the Ministry of Interior, detaining individual protesters and forcing them into vans for transport to undisclosed locations.
Video footage circulating on social media platforms also captured police officers using excessive force, slamming young demonstrators to the ground and beating them brutally.
Data released by the Ministry of Healthcare say that at least nine individuals required medical intervention as a result of these confrontations, including three police officers and six protesters, three of whom are minors.
While most were treated for minor injuries, medical officials said that two protesters remain hospitalized at the Tirana Trauma Hospital receiving care for severe injuries sustained during the clashes.
The civil unrest expanded significantly into northern Albania, drawing hundreds of marchers to the streets of Lezhë and Shkodra.
While the initial marches proceeded peacefully, property damage occurred in Shkodra during the afternoon hours when a group of masked youths split from the main demonstration and targeted the Shkodra municipality building.
The structure was pelted with stones and incendiary devices, igniting a fire that heavily damaged the main entrance doors and shattered windows.
