Albanian Students in North Macedonia threaten new wave of protests over bilingual bar exam dispute

Skopje, 19 October 2026, dtt-net.com - Albanian law students in North Macedonia warned on Monday that would relaunch mass street protests, reiterating their staunch opposition to a government plan that mandates taking professional state examinations in a combination of both Macedonian and Albanian. The students are demanding the right to take the bar exam and other market-entry professional certifications entirely in their native Albanian language, mirroring the language of their university instruction. The warning follows a nearly three-hour meeting between student representatives, academic professors, and the newly appointed Minister of Justice, Jeton Shasivari, who hails from the VLEN party, a junior governing partner of Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski's VMRO-DPMNE party. The latest proposal by the government is that of total 14 part of the exam, 12 be taken in Albanian and 2 in Macedonian. But Mevlan Ademi, a prominent leader of the law student movement and President of the Student Parliament and Association (SPA) at South-East European University (SEEU), expressed dissatisfaction with the current trajectory of negotiations.
