Bosnia floods death toll rises to 18

Sarajevo, 07 October 2024, dtt-net.com – Bodies of eighteen people are found so far in Herzegovina-Neretva County of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and searches continue for seven others reported missing, authorities said Monday after Friday severe floods and landslides in the Bosniak-Croat entity.

“According to official data from the Headquarters of Civil Protection of Herzegovina-Neretva County and the Ministry of Interior of HNŽ, the number of people who died in flood-affected areas of HNŽ, as of this report, is 18 dead,” county’s authorities said.

Of the total number of fatalities, sixteen people are from Jablanica, two from Konjic. According to information from the interior ministry, the search for three reported missing persons is active in Konjic, and for four in Jablanica. Of the 18 dead, one body is still unidentified.

In the area of ​​Jablanica and Konjic, in addition to local forces, several rescue teams from Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia and Turkey are also providing  assistance, according to a press release by county’s government.

Professional services and volunteers deliver food, water, medicines and other necessities to people in villages cut off by roads. The priority of rescue teams is to find missing persons as quickly as possible, which is why they are focused on the most critical points of the affected areas.

In the area of ​​Konjica, the population was evacuated from more populated places of the Local Community of Neretvica, and several settlements there are still cut off from traffic, without telephone and electricity networks.

According to the release, the teams on the ground are working to break through the corridor. Two people were transferred from the village of Dobrićevići to the medical care point in Konjic by helicopter of the Armed Forces of BiH. Medicine, food, clothing, hygiene and other necessities are constantly being delivered to the residents of the still cut off areas.

Both, the FBiH and the Republic of Srpska entities have declared a day of mourning Tuesday (October 8) amid deadly floods.
