Bulgarian member of EU Parliament says wording in draft-resolution on Macedonian identity and language taken off

Skopje/Brussels, 03 July 2025, dtt-net.com – A member of the European Parliament (EP) said today that the wording over Macedonian identity and language in the last month adopted draft-resolution by EP’s foreign affairs committee (AFET) was taken off last night, following yesterday’s agreement between biggest political groups in the EP, prompting reaction from North Macedonia’s head of government.

“At the request of the European People’s Party group, the three largest parties in the European Parliament – EPP, S&D (socialists) and Renew (Liberals), agreed last night to drop all references to ‘Macedonian identity’ and ‘Macedonian language’ from the draft report on the progress of Northern Macedonia,” MEP Andrey Kovatchev said through Facebook.

The EP “…calls for the swift advancement of accession negotiations, while noting the importance of adopting the constitutional amendments; urges the European Council to provide public and unequivocal support to North Macedonia that it intends to swiftly and unconditionally take a positive decision to enter into the next phase of accession negotiations upon the fulfilment of the conditions of its Conclusions of 18 July 2022 while fully respecting the Macedonian language and identity; encourages all political parties in North Macedonia to engage in constructive dialogue to achieve the necessary consensus on these amendments, which would strengthen the country’s multi-ethnic character and accelerate its progress towards EU membership”, reads the compromise amendment of AFET lawmakers of last month.

The new version agreed of the text will be put for vote next week in the EP plenary, according to the MEP, as Bulgaria refuses to recognize Macedonian identity and language and treats Macedonian language as dialect of Bulgarian, not a distinct language.

EP “…calls for the swift advancement of accession negotiations, while noting the importance of adopting the constitutional amendments; urges the European Council to signal, publicly and unequivocally, that the Council intends to swiftly and unconditionally take the positive decision to enter into the next phase of accession negotiations with North Macedonia once the conditions of its conclusions of 18 July 2022 have been fulfilled; encourages all political parties in North Macedonia to engage in constructive dialogue to achieve the necessary consensus on these amendments, which would strengthen the country’s multi-ethnic character and accelerate its progress towards EU membership,” reads the new text.
