Council of Europe body blasts Serbia judiciary law changes sponsored by President’s party

Belgrade/Strasbourg, 24 April 2026, dtt-net.com - The Venice Commission of the Council of Europe (CoE) today said that changes initiated to five laws on judiciary in late January by Serbia’s Parliament and sponsored by the ruling party of authoritarian President Aleksandar Vucic, are harmful to the autonomy of the public prosecution and judicial independence. “The amendments notably affected the scope of hierarchical control within the public prosecution service, broadened the circumstances in which provisional appointments and reappointments of public prosecutors and court presidents may be used, and altered the regime on the temporary assignment of public prosecutors,” the Venice Commission said in a press release related to its report on changes to five laws.
