Croatia calls Montenegro to “urgently” solve bilateral disputes, otherwise no closure of EU entry talks

Zagreb/Podgorica, 22 July 2026, dtt-net.com – Croatian government today warned Montenegro that the candidate country will not be allowed to conclude EU membership negotiations without solving eight bilateral disputes, of which one over maritime border. “The resolution of Montenegro's outstanding issues with Croatia is essential for the completion of negotiations with the EU,” Croatian Foreign Affairs Ministry said today in a press statement, recalling that the principle of good neighbourly relations is “one of the key political criteria” in the EU enlargement process, which is also explicitly stated in the Negotiating Framework of Montenegro and other candidate countries.
