EU does not exclude suspension of visa-free regime to Serbia amid ongoing citizenship granted to Russians

Brussels, 25 June 2026, dtt-net.com – The European Union will continue trying to convince Serbia authorities to halt granting citizenship to Russians, which it says “poses potential security risk to the EU,” and at the same time it does not exclude suspension of visa-free regime it granted in 2009 to the Russia-friendly and candidate country for membership in the European, according to sources. An EU official recalled that the European Commission (EC) in its last year report “recognised, in particular, that the acquisition of visa-free travel rights to the EU for nationals of Russia by granting them Serbia citizenship poses potential security risk to the EU.”
