Serbia students and citizens hold commemorative rally over train station tragic accident of 2024

Belgrade, 01 September 2026, dtt-net.com – Thousands of students and citizens marched today in the streets of Serbia capital town Belgrade, commemorating death of 16 people, including a student, 22 months ago after train station canopy collapse. 16 minutes of silence was held paying tribute to the victims of the tragedy of 01 November 2024 in Novi Sad train station, which had triggered widespread almost daily protests of students across the country seeking accountability from authorities.

13 people, including the former Minister of Construction, Goran Vesić, are charged by the prosecution over the tragedy. The list of people charged includes officials and representatives of public companies of construction sector too.

The prosecution and students believe that corruption in the construction sector led to the tragic event. But no trial is being held so far against those indicted by the prosecution.

Students then pressed hard for early elections and are now preparing to run against authoritarian President Aleksandar Vucic and his Progressive Party (SNS) in early parliamentary elections, which are expected to take place in October.

Three recent opinion surveys say that Students List, to be made of professors and non-affiliated personalities, would win in elections.
