Several dead in Bosnia amid severe floods and landslides, state of natural disaster declared

Sarajevo, 04 October 2024, dtt-net.com – Several people are reported dead amid severe floods and landslides in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), with authorities of Federation of BiH (FBiH) entity declaring today state of natural disaster in the territory of the entity.

Authorities said that fourteen deaths have been registered so far and that a search for a larger number of missing persons is underway, following floods and landslides caused by heavy rainfall in at least five municipalities since last night, with the worst situation being reported in Jablanica municipality in the Herzegovina-Neretva County.

“Due to heavy rainfall during the night, several places in the area of ​​Jablanica, Konjica, Kiseljak, Kreševo ​​and Fojnica were affected by floods and landslides,” entity’s Prime Minister, Nermin Nikšić, said in a media statement.

“The situation is very serious because many citizens are still trapped in their houses, and we are finding a way to reach them. Unfortunately, there were also human casualties, but we still do not have all the information related to that. We will inform the public about everything as soon as we receive confirmation from the field,” he added.

Entity’s government is mobilizing rescue teams to help evacuate people trapped in their houses.

“A terrible disaster has befallen us and we all have to stay calm, and I ask all those who find themselves in danger to call 121 and the rescue teams will respond”, entity’s Deputy Prime Minister Vojin Mijatović said in a press conference.

Mijatović said a crisis headquarters of the Government has been formed, which is in permanent session and has the task of coordinating rescue activities.

Army members and EU force (EUFOR) are deployed to help in rescue efforts.
