Skopje, 01 June 2026, dtt-net.com – North Macedonia public company NomaGas AD today confirmed that they do plan construction of a gas and hydrogen-ready interconnector with Albania, recallin that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Albanian ALBGAZ Sh.a. in September 2017 for the project.
“The MK-AL Interconnector Gas Pipeline Project represents a project of both national and regional importance. Due to its regional importance, MЕР AD Skopje (today NOMA GAS AD Skopje) and ALBGAZ Sh.a. Tirana signed a Memorandum of Understanding, expressing their interest in the implementation of such a project (archive no. 03-3459/1, date 29.09.2017),” the company told dtt-net.com through e-mail today.
It added that North Macedonia’s Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy of Albania, “in 2022, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in the energy sector, thus providing significant support to this project.”
NomaGas explained that the feasibility was done in 2010 over the 27-km-long project in the territory of North Macedonia, which would link Ohrid-Struga-Qafë Thanë (the border with Albania) with the pipeline capacity of 248.000 m³/h of gas and would be ready for hydrogen use as well.
According to the company the cost of the project ups to 18 million Euros.
NomaGas said that at the moment there is no concrete implementation plan for the project as both sides (North Macedonia and Albania) need “to renew contacts and form a working group to further advance the project.”
The response of North Macedonia’s company comes hours after the Albanian Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy told dtt-net.com through email that there is no plan between the two countries for a gas-interconnector, when asked about a Facebook post by North Macedonia Minister Sanja Bozhinovska when she wrote ten days ago through Facebook about gas interconnector project from Bitola (North Macedonia) to Elbasan (Albania).
