Sarajevo, 08 October 2024, dtt-net.com – Authorities of the Bosniak-Croat entity in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) initiated Tuesday night, urgent evacuation of people in three endangered areas in the Herzegovina-Neretva County amid warnings by the hydro-meteorological institute of heavy rainfall during the night.

“The evacuation of the population from the threatened areas of Jablanica and Konjica was started immediately and is carried out by members of the civil protection and other emergency services, with the support of rescue teams on the ground,” the government of the county said in a media statement late Tuesday.

It said that inhabitants from endangered areas must be evacuated no later than 2 AM and will be placed in already organized collective shelters in schools and sports halls, where they will be provided with beds, food, water and basic hygiene items.

The evacuation was initiated due to the warning of the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute, which forecasted heavy rainfall during the night “in the west, north and east of Herzegovina, with up to 60 litres of rain per square meter, which may lead to new occurrences of torrential streams and landslides in already threatened areas,” according to the media release.

County’s authorities said that bodies of 19 people dead are found so far and searches continue for another six, following severe floods and landslides in Jablanica and Konjica.
