Brussels, 15 September 2026, dtt-net.com – The Luxembourg-based EU’s Investment Bank (EIB) today announced its first-ever investment in small nuclear reactor (SMR) for a start-up company in Finland, for a heating project in Helsinki.
The loan of €40 million to Finland-based startup Steady Energy follows the loan of €10.5 million which the company secured in June from Innovation Funding Agency ‘Business Finland’ for its pilot underground plant, with the construction of the test facility currently under way, and operations scheduled to begin in spring 2027.
According to the company, in the test facility, the “reactor’s uranium core will be replaced by an electric heating element”, with the energy “to be fed into Helen Ltd’s district heating network” to heat homes in Finlands capital town.
Three more towns (Jyväskylä, Kerava and Kuopio) are exploring the use of similar small nuclear power plants for district heating, according to Steady Energy.
