EU lawmakers call North Macedonia to make Bulgaria-imposed constitutional changes for accession talks

Brussels/Skopje, 24 June 2025, dtt-net.com – A draft-resolution adopted today by the European Parliament’s foreign affairs committee (AFET) calls North Macedonia institutions to make constitutional changes imposed by Bulgaria and agreed by previous government in 2022 to include Bulgarian community in it, which the country needs to open first EU membership negotiating chapters.

The EP “…calls for the swift advancement of accession negotiations, while noting the importance of adopting the constitutional amendments; urges the European Council to provide public and unequivocal support to North Macedonia that it intends to swiftly and unconditionally take a positive decision to enter into the next phase of accession negotiations upon the fulfilment of the conditions of its Conclusions of 18 July 2022 while fully respecting the Macedonian language and identity; encourages all political parties in North Macedonia to engage in constructive dialogue to achieve the necessary consensus on these amendments, which would strengthen the country’s multi-ethnic character and accelerate its progress towards EU membership”, reads a compromise amendment of AFET lawmakers of the draft-resolution adopted which will be submitted to a vote in the European Parliament during an upcoming plenary session.
