Leader of Albanian opposition in North Macedonia warns of country’s future if 2001 deal and language are not respected

Tirana/Skopje, 14 April 2026, dtt-net.com – The leader of Albanian Democratic Party for Integration (BDI) Ali Ahmeti warned today in Tirana that North Macedonia has no future, and its days would be “numbered” if there are no coexistence and cogoverning between Macedonians and Albanians. He made his call for coexistence and co-government and his warning against the opposite during a speech at the Diaspora Summit organized by the Albanian government, amid increasing tensions in the country following problems surfaced over limited use of Albanian language in the EU candidate country. Ahmeti recalled the achievement of the Ohrid Agreement in 2001 and said that with the agreement the Albanian language is also an official language in North Macedonia.
