Serbia to borrow nearly 2 billion Euros from French banks for purchase of France-made fighter jets

Belgrade, 10 June 2025, dtt-net.com – The government of Serbia will take a loan of 1,9215 billion euros from six French financial institutions for purchase of 12 Rafale fighter jets from French Dassault company, according to the draft-law to be adopted by Serbian parliament, following the financial deal signed last month between the two sides amounting to total 2,745 billion Euros worth deal.

The Minister of Finance, Sinisa Mali, told today a parliamentary session, that the government has already paid two first portions of the amount, according to the deal, amounting to 30 percent of the total deal, 823,5 million Euros, respectively.

According to the agreement signed on 13 May 2025, the loan of 1,921 500 billion will be from Bred Banque Populaire, Credit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank, Credit Industriel et Commercial, Credit Lyonnais, Natixis, and Societe Generale.

The financial agreement follows the political agreement reached in August last year between Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, which followed with the deal signed by the defence ministries of the two countries in capital Belgrade.

During Macron’s visit in Serbia last year, Serbian government also signed a “letter of engagement” with French energy company Electricite de France (EDF) to explore possibility of a nuclear energy program, and a “ letter of intent’ with French government for partnership and cooperation in the field of research and exploitation of critical and strategic mineral raw materials, including lithium.
