North Macedonia’s Parliament approves in first reading draft-law on employment in public sector contested by opposition

Skopje, 15 June 2026, dtt-net.com – Lawmakers of the governing coalition in North Macedonia today in the parliament approved in the first reading a draft-law on “Adequate and Fair Representation” in the public sector, after the Constitutional Court dominated by Macedonians, last year annulled the so-called “BalancER” mechanism aimed at proportional employment based on ethnicity, with the new text still referring to the proportionality of population ethnicity according to census as principle for employment of applicants in public sector. Of 72 lawmakers present in the 120-seat parliament, 56 voted in favour of the draft-law, 16 against and no abstentions, thus proceeding it for further treatment to appropriate committees and then to the second and final vote.
