Albania government denies plans of gas interconnector with North Macedonia

Tirana/Skopje, 01 June 2026, dtt-net.com – The government of Albania has denied a Facebook post of North Macedonia minister suggesting that a gas interconnector is being planned between the two countries.

“Regarding the above, there is currently no approved or implemented project for the Bitola-Elbasan gas pipeline, so there is no official data regarding the length of a gas pipeline, diameter, capacity, investment cost, construction deadlines or other technical specifications of the nature of natural gas,” Albanian Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy, replied through e-mail to dtt-net.com, when asked about the Facebook release of North Macedonian Minister of Energy Sanja Bozhinovska.

“At the meeting, positive financial results were presented by ESM, MEPSO, NOMAGAS AND MEMO, progress of infrastructure electric and gas projects such as Bitola-Elbasan, East-West Corridor and the interconnector with Greece, as well as activities to connect with the European energy grid,” Bozhinovska said through Facebook on May 21.

Her office has not answered to the questions of dtt-net.com for more details related to the Facebook post, but Albanian ministry said that the only project which relates to Bitola-Elbasan is the electricity interconnector, over which construction works are ongoing.

North Macedonia’s public gas company, NOMAGAS, has not responded neither to dtt-net.com questions over minister’s text.
