Brussels, 18 June 2025, dtt-net.com – The legislative proposal of the European Commission (EC) to 27 member states to phase out Russian natural gas and LNG imports will not affect third countries, in this case EU candidate countries of Western Balkans region (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and North Macedonia), which get Russian natural gas from Russia-owned Turkstream pipeline in Bulgaria, EC explained today.

EC’s spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen told dtt-net.com that the reason of Turkstream pipeline, owned by Russian Gazprom, not included in the ban proposal relates to the EU customs law, as the natural gas from Bulgaria flows to non-EU members, despite the fact that through Serbia the Russian gas it then reaches Hungary too, a member country which objects EC proposal of ending Russian energy imports by 2027.
