North Macedonia and Albania eye construction of gas interconnector, according to minister

Skopje, 27 May 2026, dtt-net.com – A gas interconnector project between North Macedonia and Albania is being planned, according to North Macedonian minister of energy.

Minister Sanja Bozhinovska said through social media that the interconnector from southern town of Bitola to the Albanian border in the west of the country which would continue to Albanian town of Elbasan in central Albania is being planned and was discussed with local energy companies last week.

“At the meeting, positive financial results were presented by ESM, MEPSO, NOMAGAS AND MEMO, progress of infrastructure electric and gas projects such as Bitola-Elbasan, East-West Corridor and the interconnector with Greece, as well as activities to connect with the European energy grid,” she said through Facebook.

The minister did not answer to question of dtt-net.com for more details of project.

North Macedonia is planning to conclude construction works of gas interconnector with Greece by the end of next year to supply the country with American LNG from Greek Terminal of Alexandropoulos. The pipeline is also hydrogen-ready.

North Macedonia is eyeing to construct three more gas-fired power plants, on top of the project in southern municipality of Bitola, according to country’s prime minister.

Referring to the last year agreement signed with Turkiye’s AKSA company, Hristijan Mickoski told the parliament in February that one such power plant is planned to be constructed in capital Skopje, one halfway between Gostivar and Tetovo, and one potentially when gas is transported to Kicevo and the Oslomej TPP is transformed by adding a gas turbine in addition to a steam turbine.

Mickoski said that amount to be invested in the projects is up to 1 billion Euros.

The three projects mentioned by Mickoski are on top of the 250 MWh project in Bitola.
