Skopje, 27 May 2026, dtt-net.com – Seven illegal migrants were intercepted and two Kosovan nationals attempting to smuggle them were arrested yesterday by North Macedonia police. Police said the interception happened on the Gevgelija-Negotino highway, after it spotted two suspected vehicles, with one of them carrying seven migrants from Egypt.
“Previously, police officers stopped a “Volkswagen Transporter” vehicle with Kosovo national plates, driven by A.G. and a “Skoda Octavia” vehicle with Kosovo national plates, driven by G.G., where seven migrants from Egypt were found in the “Volkswagen” vehicle and it was determined that the “Skoda” vehicle was a precursor,” police said in a press release today.
Kosovan nationals will be charged of migrant smuggling, while Egyptians intercepted are housed in the Asylum Seekers Center in Vizbegovo-Skopje.
Compared to January-April 2025 period, the number of irregular border crossings through Western Balkans region to the EU territory in same period 2026 dropped for 19% less, to 2829 respectively, according to the new data by EU’s border agency FRONTEX.
According to the agency, the Croatian border with BiH remained the “main exit point” from the region while as weather improves and migrant mobility increases, the route is expected to come under growing pressure from secondary movements linked to the Eastern Mediterranean.
