kopje, 15 October 2026, dtt- net.com – The Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Hristijan Mickoski, says that because of Bulgaria’s denial of Macedonian identity and language, a solution to the matter needed to unlock EU accession, is unlikely to be found.
“If they really want to see a neighbour who will be part of the European Union, and not a neighbour from whom they will demand a solution to issues from the 11th century, the 10th century, the Middle Ages, unfortunately, we do not have living people to witness what happened then, and based on the historical facts that we read, we and they have different interpretations. So, as long as these bilateral barriers exist, it is unlikely that we will find a solution,” the PM told TV21.
Imposed by Bulgaria in 2022, the EU tells Skopje to change the Constitution and integrate Bulgarian community in it.
Mickoski’s biggest party in the country VMRO-DPMNE refuses to give party’s votes in the parliament to make constitutional changes without formal guarantees by the EU that there will be no more conditions set by Sofia in the future about Macedonian culture, language and history and Bulgaria respects the rights of Macedonian community in her own territory.
Mickoski has last month said that he would be ready to change the Constitution and stipulated in the negotiating framework of 2022, but would implement it only after all 27 member countries ratify accession treaty with North Macedonia.
