Prishtina, 03 June 2026, dtt-net.com – Students of Kosovo today called a rally for Friday (June 5) in capital Prishtina in front of North Macedonia embassy, in support to the calls of Albanian students of neighbouring country for use of Albanian language in exams for professional licences needed for entering job market.
In their call, students of Kosovo Faculty of Philology invited others to join them in a peaceful protest “against the violation of the right to use the Albanian language in the jurisprudence exam and all other state exams in North Macedonia.”
“Albanian language is not a privilege. It is the right of hundreds of thousands of Albanians in Northern Macedonia. We believe that the education, profession and future of young people should not be hindered by unfairly placed language barriers,” they wrote in a call through Facebook.
Two protests have been organized in Skopje so far this year by Albanian students of North Macedonia. In their support, a rally took place last month too in Albania capital of Tirana.
Protests are launched after Macedonian Minister of Justice Igor Filkov is not allowing Albanian law students to take bar exam in their native language.
But Albanian students are now calling for full use of Albanian language in other exams and country’s public institutions, referring to the 2018 law on the use of languages, over what Albanians and Macedonians are in dispute with different interpretations over the law and specific laws related.
On Monday, the Deputy Prime Minister Bekim Sali (Albanian) said that a working group hired by the government is proposing partial use of Albanian language in bar exam. According to Sali, the theoretical part of bar exam will be taken in Albanian on request of students and practical part in Macedonian language.
Sali said that the proposal, once adopted by the government, will be send to the Venice of Commission of Council of Europe (CoE) for review, as had earlier pledged the Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski (Macedonian).
One of the main organizers of students’ protests in North Macedonia, the law student Mevlan Ademi has blasted government’s offer and called for full use of Albanian language in the bar exam.
Ademi assessed government’s offer announced by Sali as “semi-solution” and “unacceptable”.
“Any attempt to offer a partial solution, a “semi-solution” or a path towards the Law on the Use of Languages is unacceptable. The Albanian language is not a negotiation matter. It is not a favour. It is not a compromise. It is a constitutional and legal right,” Ademi blasted government’s offer in a reaction through Facebook yesterday.
